Safe Space: Psychological safety isn’t enough

Psychological safety isn’t enough — here’s what it misses

You’ve invested in building psychological safety. You wanted it to drive innovation, improve decision-making, reduce failure, and enhance retention.

Did it? For some organisations, probably. For most, it’s more complicated than that.

The problem with initiatives aimed at building psychological safety is that they aspire to create a feeling, in the hope that behaviour change follows. It’s like the DJ at the party — choosing the music in the hope that people will get up and dance.

But it misses a critical step — equipping people with the psychological flexibility to risk being the first one onto the dance floor.

If you’ve done the safety work and quietly suspect it isn’t the whole answer, this is for you.

Join HRDs, Heads of Learning and Heads of Change for our Safe Space event, exploring what psychological safety is missing — Wednesday 7 October 2026, 1–2pm UK.

Our safe space events are genuinely open conversations that bring peers together for honest exchange and fresh thinking. We’ll discuss:

  • The promise of psychological safety: what it has, and has not, delivered
  • The potential of psychological flexibility: the missing step between feeling safe and acting differently

You’ll leave with perspective you can take straight back to your leadership teams.
