Safe Space: Women & Ageing

“I do think that when it comes to ageing, we’re held to a different standard than men. Some guy said to me: ‘Don’t you think you’re too old to sing rock ’n’ roll?’ I said: ‘You’d better check with Mick Jagger.’” – Cher

We need to talk about women & age.

The population of ‘older’ women is growing in number and power. The number of women, globally, aged 60+ is expected to rise from 605 million to 1.14 billion by 2050. And women as a whole (globally and across all ages) currently drive 64% of consumer purchases, projected to rise to 75% in 2028.

And yet, women who have the audacity to age experience ageism and inequality in the workplace and wider society. For instance, did you know women are more likely to work part time, less likely to qualify for workplace pensions and less likely to receive job-related training than men?  Did you know they are more likely to experience discrimination, especially black women?  Do you notice that older women are underrepresented, and poorly represented in the media?

Join our Safe Space event for a conversation about the intersection of gender and age.  Register here for the event details.

A Becoming Safe Space is a time for people to come together to explore a thorny issue. No expert input, no pre-prepared answers, simply a space to be together, discuss what is going on, and think about what might be helpful. During this Safe Space we’ll explore the experiences and aspirations of individuals and organisations relating to women and age. We look forward to seeing you there.

The event is finished.
