We don't control our thoughts. We do get to control our actions.

An acceptance and commitment therapy approach to leadership.

The scientific basis of the work we do in equipping women to lead as themselves is important to us at Becoming.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT for short, is one of the underpinnings to our work developing women leaders. ACT is a well-evidenced and growing form of clinical therapy. It builds individuals’ psychological flexibility. And it does this so they better know and accept themselves, they focus on their values and purpose and they move to committed action.

Drop the Struggle

Front cover of Drop the struggle book by Dr Alison Maitland and Jenna Ashford

Dr Alison Maitland has co-authored a book, ‘Drop the Struggle’,  with Chartered Psychologist Jenna Ashford. The book applies the universal processes and tools from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to improve performance and wellbeing in sport.

Drop the Struggle recognises that sometimes there is something holding you back from being at your best? You might be struggling with nerves and anxiety, confidence, motivation, or maybe facing a setback? Perhaps you have some strategies that work in the short-term, but the effects wear off and you are left in the same place as you were before.

Drop the Struggle takes a a new approach. One that challenges you to think differently, so you can achieve the things you desire most in sport and in life.

Written for athletes, coaches and anyone wanting to achieve more, Drop the Struggle turns sports psychology on its head. Think of it like a practical kitbag of ways to succeed. This book will teach you a sustainable way to deal with difficult thoughts, manage your emotions and harness them to help you perform to the best of your ability.
